Five New Yorkers charged in relation to the disappearance and death of a Minnesota transgender man

Five people have been arrested and charged in connection with the disappearance and death of 24-year-old transgender man Sam Nordquist in New York. Human remains believed to be Nordquist’s were found in Yates County after he was reported missing by his family. Officials are investigating the case as a homicide, with evidence suggesting Nordquist was the victim of a criminal act and may have been subjected to prolonged physical and psychological abuse. Five suspects from New York have been charged with second-degree murder. The suspects are being held without bail, and a preliminary hearing and grand jury action are expected to happen soon. The relationship between Nordquist and the suspects is still being investigated.

Nordquist had last been in touch with his family in January and had traveled from Minnesota to New York in September 2024. Investigators executed search warrants at a lodge where Nordquist had been staying with one of the suspects. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of Nordquist’s death. Officials described the crime as beyond depraved and one of the worst homicide investigations they have been a part of. Rochester city council members expressed support for Nordquist’s family and emphasized the importance of protecting the rights and safety of LGBTQIA+ individuals. The investigation is ongoing.
