Snowstorm overtakes northern regions, flooding plagues southern states, and severe storms ravage eastern U.S.

Severe weather is expected to impact much of the eastern half of the United States this weekend, with significant snowfall in the Upper Midwest through to New England and “life-threatening” flash flooding possible in parts of the Southeast. The National Weather Service is predicting heavy snow in Michigan, upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, northern Massachusetts, and interior Maine with possible double-digit totals. There is a high risk of severe flash flooding in the Ohio and Tennessee valleys, specifically in Kentucky and Tennessee, impacting around 21 million people from Arkansas to Pennsylvania. Widespread thunderstorms could drop up to 8 inches of rain in some areas. Portions of the lower Mississippi Valley are at risk of strong tornadoes. In addition to flooding, there is a risk of ice accumulation in the Northeast, causing challenging driving conditions. The storm is expected to intensify in the Northeast with strong winds and blowing snow, making travel difficult. By early next week, the storm is expected to move off the East Coast, but cold air and gusty winds will linger. Winter weather alerts are in effect for around 70 million people from Nebraska to Maine.
