Rest of the World, a nonprofit publication dedicated to showcasing the impact of technology on communities worldwide, recently announced the winners of its annual photo contest. The contest featured submissions from 45 countries, highlighting the diverse ways in which technology influences lives and landscapes around the globe.
The winning photo, “Scanned on the border,” captured by Grace Yoon from the United States, depicts U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials collecting facial scans from migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. The image offers a poignant glimpse into the current realities faced by asylum seekers and the dehumanizing effects of biometric data collection.
The second-place photo, “An exam cram in green,” by Saumya Khandelwal from India, portrays a young woman studying for government exams while balancing household duties and caring for a newborn. The photo illustrates the challenges faced by women in pursuing education and career opportunities.
In third place is “Viewing party in a tent” by Claire Thomas from Mongolia, showcasing a community gathering inside a traditional tent to watch a documentary about a Norwegian reindeer herder. Additionally, six photos received honorable mentions, including images that explore the intersection of technology with renewable energy, traditional attire, and innovative payment methods in refugee camps.
