Assistant coach from the Dallas Mavericks arrested following assault probe

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong, 56, was arrested by Dallas police on an aggravated assault charge after hitting a victim with a gun and threatening to shoot them during an argument early Sunday morning. The incident took place in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue around 3:45 a.m. Dallas Police reported that Armstrong and the victim knew each other, and Dallas Fire Rescue treated the victim at the scene.

Armstrong, who played for the Mavericks late in his playing career and joined the coaching staff in 2008-09, has not been placed in jail. The Mavericks have placed him on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. It is unclear if Armstrong has an attorney representing him in this case.

Dallas Police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident. The Dallas Mavericks organization issued a statement acknowledging the incident involving a member of their staff. Armstrong was a backup point guard on the 2005-06 Mavericks team that reached the NBA Finals but lost to Miami.

The Associated Press contributed to the report, and further details about the case are to be discovered as the investigation continues.
