A new public database called the Rhode Island Rental Registry has recently launched, aiming to provide information on lead inspection data for rental properties across the state. The database, managed by the Rhode Island Department of Health, allows residents to check if a rental property has been awarded a Certificate of Lead Conformance to ensure lead safety in older homes.
However, the launch of the registry has been met with criticism from the Rhode Island Coalition of Housing Providers. The coalition raised concerns about the inclusion of single-family, owner-occupied properties in the database, labeling it as beyond the scope of the state law. They also criticized the use of AI technology to populate the database without homeowners’ consent, leading to privacy concerns.
Despite these issues, the health department mentioned that adjustments will be made based on feedback from tenants, landlords, and stakeholders. Landlords who fail to register their properties by the deadline will face fines, highlighting the importance of following the state’s lead laws to protect tenants from potential lead exposure.
