The Rhode Island Department of Health has recently launched the RI Rental Registry, a public database where landlords must register their properties and renters can check if their property has received certificates for lead conformance. This database aims to promote transparency, safety, and accountability for tenants in Rhode Island.
Since 2005, lead certificates have been required by state law for homes built before 1978 to ensure they are lead-safe. Landlords were required to register their rental properties by October 1, 2024, under the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act. Failure to register or obtain a lead certificate can result in fines starting this summer.
Lead exposure can negatively impact a child’s health, causing developmental delays and learning disabilities. Therefore, it is crucial for landlords to comply with lead safety regulations to provide safe and healthy housing for renters.
The database also includes a portal for landlords to easily register their properties, with a requirement for annual re-registration. Tenants are encouraged to check the database for their residence and report any unregistered properties to the health department.
