The United States Department of State has made significant changes to its fact sheet on Taiwan, dropping the wording that previously stated Washington does not support Taiwan’s independence. The updated fact sheet now emphasizes the need for Taiwan’s dispute with China to be resolved peacefully and in a manner acceptable to both sides. The State Department described the changes as routine and reaffirmed its commitment to the “One China Policy” while also supporting peaceful dialogue between Taiwan and China.
The modified fact sheet also highlights Pentagon’s cooperation with Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council. The American Institute in Taiwan, Washington’s de-facto embassy in Taipei, was closed on Presidents’ Day and did not comment on the changes. Despite downplaying the significance of the changes, some analysts believe it sends a message to China about the US relationship with Taiwan.
Taiwan, a self-governed democracy officially recognized by few countries, maintains unofficial ties with the US. President Biden’s statements on defending Taiwan against China have been cautiously walked back by the US State Department. The Taiwanese government welcomed the updated wording on the fact sheet and expressed gratitude for the US support in various areas including economic and trade partnerships.
The changes to the fact sheet have been seen by some as a bold move by the Trump administration to assert US influence in the region. Taiwan’s Foreign Minister praised the US commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and pledged to deepen Taiwanese investment in the US as a strategic partnership to support American high-tech manufacturing. China’s embassies in Washington, DC and Canberra did not respond to requests for comment on the changes.
