Rhode Island state representative Joseph McNamara is spearheading an initiative to require all high school football players in his state to wear protective head gear known as “Guardian Caps.” McNamara aims to make the sport safer for young athletes and believes that the use of these caps will benefit everyone involved. The NFL has already mandated the use of Guardian Caps, reporting a 52% reduction in concussions for certain positions during the mandated period.
Guardian Caps provide a soft padded layer to the outside of hard-shell helmets, allowing forces to be redirected around the head and reducing radiant heat. McNamara’s legislation would gradually introduce the caps to Rhode Island high school football teams, with existing players having the option to opt out if they choose. This proposed change could set a new trend for high school football safety nationwide.
