The Rhode Island Sports Commission is anticipating a significant boost to the local economy in the first quarter of 2025, with nearly $18 million in direct spending expected from sports tourism. A total of 15 sporting events, including NCAA Championships and cheerleading competitions, are set to take place in Providence, Warwick, and surrounding communities, bringing in over 22,000 contracted hotel room nights and an estimated 78,550 attendees.
Jonathan Walker, senior director of sports sales for the commission, highlighted the diverse range of sports events that will be hosted in Rhode Island, from recreational tournaments to nationally televised championships. These events not only benefit local businesses by filling hotel rooms and convention center space, but also attract visitors from across the country, providing a significant source of revenue for the state.
Tom Riel, senior vice president of the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau, emphasized the crucial role sports tourism plays in driving economic activity during the winter months when leisure travel tends to be slower. In fact, sports account for more than 75% of the total room nights, attendees, and estimated direct spending generated by events in the first quarter of the year.
With major events like the NCAA DI Men’s Basketball Championship and the Spirit Fest Grand Nationals on the schedule, Rhode Island is poised to showcase its potential as a premier sports tourism destination in 2025. These events not only benefit local businesses and facilities but also highlight the state’s ability to host a wide range of sporting events that appeal to participants and spectators alike.
