Rhode Island’s top federal prosecutor, Zachary Cunha, has resigned from his position at the request of the Trump administration. Cunha, who was appointed by President Joe Biden in September 2021, submitted his resignation earlier this month. First Assistant US Attorney Sara Miron Bloom has taken over as Acting US Attorney for Rhode Island. Despite the upheaval at the Justice Department, Trump’s request for Cunha’s resignation aligns with the tradition of new administrations asking US Attorneys to step down.
Cunha expressed gratitude to Senators Reed and Whitehouse for recommending his nomination and to President Biden for appointing him. Both senators praised Cunha’s dedication to the law and commitment to justice. In his departure announcement, Cunha highlighted the office’s accomplishments during his tenure.
The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Cunha’s resignation. Ultimately, Cunha’s departure marks a shift in leadership within Rhode Island’s federal prosecutor’s office.
