Zachary Cunha ’98, U.S. Attorney for Rhode Island, resigns from position under Trump’s request

Rhode Island’s top federal prosecutor, Zachary Cunha, has resigned from his position following a request from the Trump administration. Cunha, who was appointed by President Biden in September 2021, submitted his resignation earlier this month, with First Assistant US Attorney Sara Miron Bloom taking over as Acting US Attorney for Rhode Island. Despite the ongoing upheaval at the Justice Department, Cunha’s resignation is in line with the customary practice of newly inaugurated presidents asking all US Attorneys to resign. Senators Reed and Whitehouse praised Cunha for his dedication to the law and commitment to justice. In a press release, Cunha expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the United States Attorney for Rhode Island and highlighted the accomplishments of his office during his tenure. The White House has not yet commented on Cunha’s resignation. Overall, Cunha’s departure marks a significant change in leadership within the Rhode Island federal prosecutor’s office.
