Providence woman sentenced for smuggling contraband into prison
Providence, RI – Yahaira Cristina Contreras, 32, has been sentenced for her role in smuggling contraband into Wyatt Detention Center in Central Falls. Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Bloom announced that Contreras admitted to providing 201 suboxone strips containing buprenorphine to a correctional officer at the facility in early 2021.
Contreras was sentenced to two years of federal supervised release, with the first six months to be served in home detention with GPS monitoring. She was also fined $1,500 for her involvement in the scheme.
According to federal prosecutors, Contreras conspired with others to provide the contraband and transferred $3,000 from her bank account to facilitate its entry into the prison. The smuggling operation was discovered and Contreras was charged shortly after the incident.
The U.S. Attorney’s office is committed to cracking down on such illegal activities and holding individuals like Contreras accountable for their actions.
