The University of Rhode Island has achieved a significant milestone by being named one of the nation’s top research universities. The prestigious Research 1 (R1) designation was awarded to URI by the Carnegie Foundation for Teaching and the American Council on Education, recognizing the university’s advanced research activity and impact. With only seven percent of four-year universities in the country receiving this honor, URI joins Brown University as one of the two Rhode Island schools to achieve R1 status.
University President Marc Parlange expressed his pride in this accomplishment, highlighting URI’s high level of research activity and impact. The R1 classification signifies the university’s commitment to research excellence, with increased doctoral degree enrollment, research expenditures, and publications contributing to this achievement.
The updated methodology by the ACE and Carnegie Foundation aims to better account for the diverse research landscape of higher education institutions in the United States. URI’s inclusion in the R1 category reflects its dedication to advancing research and development, placing the university among the top-tier research institutions in the nation.
