Controversial artist set to make comeback at Providence Place with exclusive screening of ‘Secret Mall Apartment’

After nearly 18 years, artist Michael Townsend is set to make a triumphant return to Providence Place Mall next month. Townsend was banned for life from the mall after building a one-room apartment in its walls, but now, a documentary called “Secret Mall Apartment” directed by Jeremy Workman and executive produced by Jesse Eisenberg tells his story. The film will have its first theatrical screening at the mall on March 21, coinciding with the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Townsend, along with other artists involved in the creation of the secret apartment, may participate in an event around the film’s release, as mall leadership has been in talks with Workman. The documentary will also be shown in New York City and Los Angeles before a national rollout.

Some have suggested that the artists should be publicly pardoned and the apartment rebuilt inside the mall’s Tiffany jewelry store. This unique story of creative rebellion and redemption is sure to draw attention and spark conversations about art, identity, and the power of storytelling.
