Venezuela has welcomed back a group of its nationals who were deported from the United States and taken to Guantanamo Bay. The government of Venezuela expressed its disapproval of the criminalization of its citizens and stated that if any of the repatriated individuals had committed a crime, they would be dealt with according to Venezuelan law and respecting human rights. This repatriation flight, carrying approximately 180 people, marks the third such flight between the US and Venezuela since an agreement was reached between President Donald Trump’s special envoy and Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The US Department of Justice had previously reported that the individuals deported to Guantanamo Bay had final deportation orders. The Trump administration has been tight-lipped about the details of those held at the military base, although officials have suggested that some of the men were members of a designated terrorist organization. The repatriation of these individuals is seen as a step towards improving relations between the US and Venezuela.
