Providence Woman Sentenced for Providing Suboxone to Prison
Yahaira Contreras of Providence, Rhode Island, has been sentenced to two years of federal supervised release for providing suboxone strips to a local prison. Contreras admitted to conspiring with others to provide 201 suboxone strips to a Wyatt Detention Facility correctional officer in early 2021. The contraband ended up inside the prison in Central Falls. Suboxone, which contains buprenorphine, is used to treat opioid dependence.
Contreras also transferred $3,000 to another person’s account to facilitate the smuggling of the suboxone strips into the prison. Another individual, former correctional officer Kaii Almeida-Falcones, pleaded guilty to a similar charge and was sentenced to six months in federal prison followed by 24 months of supervised release.
Acting U.S. Attorney Sara Miron Bloom announced Contreras’ sentence, which includes six months of home detention with GPS monitoring and a $1,500 fine. The case is ongoing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
