Concrete fell onto cars in the Prudential Tunnel in Boston on Friday afternoon, leading to the closure of two left lanes. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation attributed the lane closures to debris on the roadway. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but several vehicles sustained damage. Officials clarified that the incident was caused by a section of non-structural concrete that dislodged and fell into a travel lane due to an expansion joint issue below Huntington Avenue.
Crews are currently inspecting the tunnel and may remove other loose pieces of concrete. Additional inspections are set to occur on Friday night to ensure the continued safety of the tunnel. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes as the situation is being addressed. This incident brings to mind a similar occurrence in March 1999 when concrete slabs fell from the I-195 tunnel under the Fall River Government Center. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported in that incident.
