Billionaire Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to federal employees, stating they must respond to an email justifying their work for the week or resign. The email, sent from the Office of Personnel Management, asked employees to list their accomplishments for the week by Monday night. Failure to respond was said to be taken as a resignation, according to Musk. However, FBI Director Kash Patel told employees to pause responses to the email and said the FBI would review their work internally. The American Federation of Government Employees condemned Musk and the Trump administration for the email, vowing to challenge any unlawful terminations of federal employees. A chapter representing National Treasury Employees Union members advised them not to respond to the email since OPM directives that had not been formally communicated by their employer did not create an obligation to respond. The email comes as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency attempts to make sweeping cuts to the federal workforce. Over 3 million people were employed by the federal government as of November 2024.
