Billionaire Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to federal employees, stating they must respond to an email justifying their work for the week or resign. The email, sent from the Office of Personnel Management, asked employees to list their accomplishments for the week by Monday night. A chapter representing National Treasury Employees Union members advised them not to respond to the email since OPM directives that had not been formally communicated by their employer did not create an obligation to respond. The email comes as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency attempts to make sweeping cuts to the federal workforce. Over 3 million people were employed by the federal government as of November 2024.
