First public address by Pope Francis since recovering from pneumonia in hospital

Pope Francis addressed his followers for the first time since being hospitalized with double pneumonia, thanking them for their prayers and blessings. The 88-year-old leader of the Catholic Church suffered from respiratory issues due to mucus accumulation in his airways. He had part of a lung removed in his youth and has had past respiratory problems. This hospitalization, which began on Feb. 14, is the longest of his papacy. Vatican officials released an audio recording of Francis speaking to his followers as they gathered to pray in St. Peter’s Square. The Pope’s condition required medical intervention, including the use of supplemental oxygen and a ventilation mask at night. Despite his setbacks, Francis received ashes and Holy Communion on Ash Wednesday to mark the start of Lent. Cardinal Angelo De Donatis took over the Pope’s duties at Vatican celebrations during his hospitalization. The faithful continue to offer their prayers and support to Pope Francis during his recovery.
