Majority of Rhode Islanders in Favor of Bottle Bill, According to Latest Poll

A recent poll conducted by the Mellman Group in Rhode Island revealed that a majority of registered voters in the state support the implementation of a deposit return system for beverage containers, commonly referred to as a bottle bill. The poll, funded by organizations like Save The Bay and Clean Water Action, highlighted concerns about litter and waste in Rhode Island’s coastline and marine waters, with 71% expressing worries about the effectiveness of the state’s recycling system. The poll also showed that 58% of voters support a bottle bill after considering arguments from both sides.

Save The Bay’s director of advocacy, Jed Thorp, emphasized Rhode Islanders’ frustration with single-use beverage container litter, citing the success of bottle bills in reducing waste in other states. A coalition of environmental groups and industry trade organizations are advocating for the passage of a bottle bill this year, with a special joint legislative commission currently studying options to address waste and litter from beverage containers. The poll surveyed 400 registered voters in Rhode Island between Feb. 4-10.
