Multiple deaths reported in clashes between Syrian forces and pro-Assad fighters | News from Syria’s ongoing conflict

Violence has erupted in Syria’s coastal region as security forces battle gunmen loyal to deposed President Bashar al-Assad. The fighting in Latakia has left more than 70 people dead, including security forces, gunmen, and civilians. The government has sent reinforcements to try to regain control, imposing a curfew in Latakia and Tartous.

Interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa is facing challenges to consolidate control and lift US sanctions, as well as dealing with security issues in other parts of the country. Turkey has warned against provocations in Latakia, saying they threaten peace in the region.

Alawite activists have reported violence and attacks against their community since al-Assad’s fall, particularly in rural areas. The Alawite Islamic Council has blamed the government for the violence and called for the coastal region to be put under UN protection.

Under al-Assad, Alawites held top positions in the army and security agencies. The new government has accused his loyalists of carrying out attacks against the new security forces. Efforts to run Syria inclusively have not yet included meetings with senior Alawite figures.

The situation remains tense in Syria’s Alawite stronghold as the government tries to regain control and address the deep-seated divisions in the country.
