Residents of Coventry, Rhode Island, have been experiencing delays in the pick-up of their recycling bins due to breakdowns of the town’s fleet of trucks. The issue stems from a decision made 10 years ago when the town purchased the current trucks on a 10-year loan, causing them to break down daily. The recent extreme weather, including strong winds, has also exacerbated the problem, with recycling bins spilling over and creating a mess for residents.
Coventry’s Town Manager, Daniel Parillo, has acknowledged the issue and has arranged for a rental truck to help alleviate the backlog until three new trucks arrive by the summer. The rental truck is expected to arrive next week, costing $11,000 a month, with the goal of having eight trucks daily to clear the backlog. Parillo is hopeful that this temporary solution will help get things back on track and prevent recycling bins from being left on the side of the road for extended periods. Residents are relieved to hear of the town’s efforts to address the problem and ensure a more efficient recycling pick-up process in the future.
