Monday Report: Ongoing Violence in Syria

Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Shara, has called for calm and unity in the country after violent clashes erupted between government fighters and supporters of ousted dictator Bashar al-Assad, resulting in over 1,000 deaths, including 700 civilians. Al-Shara assured the Syrian people that the country has the fundamentals for survival despite the ongoing violence.

The fighting in Syria escalated when armed men loyal to al-Assad ambushed government security forces in Latakia Province, leading to widespread protests and chaos in the streets. A fact-finding committee has been formed to investigate the violence and bring those responsible to justice, although it remains unclear whether al-Shara is acknowledging killings by his forces or solely blaming al-Assad loyalists.

In other news, Canada’s Liberals headed to the polls with Mark Carney and Chrystia Freeland competing to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as leader of both the Liberal Party and the country. The winner will have to call a general election by October, with surveys showing Carney as the front-runner. The race is said to be influenced by voters’ desire for a leader who can effectively negotiate with U.S. President Trump.

China also announced retaliatory tariffs on Canadian goods, following Canada’s earlier imposition of steep taxes on Chinese imports. The move is seen as a warning to Canada, and indirectly Mexico, not to cooperate with the U.S. on trade. Meanwhile, businesses across Europe are feeling the impact of inflation, with rising costs affecting bottom lines. Renowned children’s book author Uri Shulevitz also passed away at the age of 89.
