Meteorite verified in unusual incident involving an ice cream container in Pennsylvania.
A meteorite crashed through a parked vehicle’s window in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, on May 17, 2023, landing on an ice cream container. Initially investigated as potential vandalism, security footage showed no suspects, but a smoky trail streak forced the car owner to seek expert analysis.
The Brown University Ibarra Lab confirmed the rock as a meteorite fall, later informally named the “Ice Cream Drop.” Professor Dan Ibarra and graduate student Riley Havel, along with visiting student Jiquan Chen, conducted advanced isotopic analysis to distinguish the meteorite from terrestrial rocks.
University officials praised the team’s efforts in verifying the unusual incident, showcasing the crucial role of scientific expertise in understanding phenomena such as meteorite falls. The university’s Department of Earth, Environmental & Planetary Sciences continues to contribute to cutting-edge research in meteoritics and planetary science.
