The Economic Progress Institute (EPI) is urging Congress to support a strong and independent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), which has been targeted for closure by Elon Musk and his DOGE team. EPI Director Alan Krinsky emphasized the importance of the CFPB in protecting consumers from unfair and fraudulent practices, and highlighted the agency’s track record of holding financial institutions accountable and returning billions of dollars to consumers. EPI has joined hundreds of organizations in calling on Congress to restore a strong and independent CFPB, oppose legislative attacks on the agency, and enact measures to protect consumers from predatory practices. Krinsky recently met with Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed to discuss the importance of the CFPB in helping Rhode Islanders respond to financial challenges. EPI is participating in the Consumer Federation of America’s Consumer Advocacy Week to advocate for consumer protections and is planning further meetings with members of the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation.
