Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha and 20 other attorneys general have filed a lawsuit to prevent the Trump administration from laying off over 1,300 U.S. Department of Education employees. The layoffs are part of a plan to shut down the Department of Education, according to Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. The plaintiffs argue that these layoffs would severely impact key educational programs and services, such as speech therapy for children with special needs and federal support for rural and underserved communities.
The Department of Education serves millions of students and manages financial aid programs for postsecondary students. The attorneys general also claim that the administration’s actions violate the separation of powers, as only Congress has the authority to abolish executive agencies. This move has resulted in the closure of several Office of Civil Rights branches and poses a threat to the administration of essential programs. Neronha condemned the layoffs as reckless and called for them to be halted immediately. The White House has not responded to requests for comment.
