Man charged with intoxication manslaughter in Texas crash that left 5 dead and involved 17 vehicles

Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, was charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault after a late-night wreck in Austin, Texas, that involved over a dozen vehicles on Interstate 35. Five people were killed, including three adults, a child, and an infant, and 11 others were injured. The southbound lanes of I-35 were closed following the crash and reopened at about 1 p.m. the next day. Police have not provided details on the circumstances that led to the wreck, as the investigation is ongoing. The collision was described as “very large and complex” by authorities. Edgar Viera, who was at a nearby store, tried to help those involved in the crash but said they didn’t have the proper tools to rescue individuals from the mangled vehicles. Araya is currently in custody at Travis County Jail, and it’s unknown if he has an attorney representing him. The tragic incident left the interstate littered with debris and destroyed vehicles, leaving the community in shock and mourning the loss of five lives.
