Trump authorizes airstrikes on Iran-supported Houthi rebels in Yemen and issues fresh warning

President Donald Trump ordered a series of airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, in response to attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels on shipping along a vital maritime corridor. He promised to use “overwhelming lethal force” until the attacks cease and warned Iran to stop supporting the rebel group. The airstrikes targeted the terrorists’ bases, leaders, and missile defenses to protect American shipping and naval assets. The Houthis reported explosions in their territory, and images showed plumes of black smoke. The strikes come after the Houthis threatened to resume attacks on Israeli vessels and carried out previous attacks on military and civilian ships. The U.S. strikes were the first of the second Trump administration against the Houthis and were conducted by the U.S. alone. The operation involved the USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group and the USS Georgia cruise missile submarine in the region. Trump announced the strikes from his golf club in Florida, emphasizing the economic impact and risk to innocent lives caused by the attacks. The airstrikes were in response to the Houthis’ campaign targeting vessels and come after a period of relative quiet in the region. The Houthis faced economic problems and dissent at home amid Yemen’s stalemated war. Israel, the U.S., and Britain had previously hit Houthi-held areas in Yemen, but Israel did not comment on the latest strikes.
