Court filings allege that a Brown Medicine professor and doctor with a valid visa was deported to Lebanon.

Dr. Rasha Alawieh, an assistant professor at Brown Medicine, was deported to Lebanon after returning from a trip to Lebanon, despite having a valid U.S. visa. A court petition filed on her behalf alleged that she was detained at Boston Logan International Airport for 36 hours without justification before being sent back to Lebanon. The U.S. District Court for Massachusetts had ordered that she should not be removed from the state without 48 hours’ notice and a reason. Customs and Border Protection said that arriving aliens bear the burden of establishing admissibility to the United States. A notice of court order violation was filed, accusing CBP of willfully disobeying the court’s order and requesting Alawieh’s immediate return to Massachusetts. Alawieh, a Lebanese citizen, had been issued an H-1B visa for her employment at Brown Medicine. She obtained her medical degree from the American University of Beirut and completed programs at various U.S. universities before starting her assistant professorship at Brown. Brown University expressed distress over the treatment of their colleague and stated they are seeking more information. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Monday.
