Whitehouse defeats Costa in Rhode Island primary election

Rhode Island’s Democratic primary election saw incumbent Senator Sheldon Whitehouse emerge victorious against challenger Michael Costa, while State Representative Patricia Morgan secured the Republican nomination. Voter turnout was around 10%, lower than previous years. Whitehouse, first elected in 2006, will now face Morgan in the general election. The primary also saw Representatives Gabe Amo and Seth Magaziner win uncontested races. In the Republican mayoral primary, Ken Hopkins defeated Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung. The primary results were announced alongside those of Delaware and New Hampshire, just before the 2024 Presidential debates between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. The state’s Voter Turnout Tracker reported around 80,000 Rhode Islanders voting in the primary. Whitehouse won with 85% of the vote against Costa. Morgan secured the Republican Senate nomination with 61.5% of the vote. Hopkins won the Republican mayoral primary with 58.8% of the vote and will face Democrat Robert Ferri in November. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) will be up for reelection in 2026. The general election is set for November 5.
