Filmmaker Carl Erik Rinsch was arrested for allegedly defrauding Netflix out of $11 million for a science fiction series he never completed. Netflix had paid Rinsch $44 million for the unproduced series “White Horse,” which was later renamed “Conquest.” Rinsch received an additional $11 million from Netflix in 2020 but did not use the funds to complete the show. Instead, he transferred the money to personal accounts and spent it on personal expenses, luxury items, and failed investments. Rinsch never returned the funds to Netflix, who reportedly canceled the show in early 2021. Rinsch is facing charges including wire fraud, money laundering, and engaging in monetary transactions from unlawful activity. This arrest comes after an arbitrator ruled that Netflix was owed damages in a separate case where Rinsch alleged breach of contract. Prosecutors are cracking down on fraud, and Rinsch’s arrest serves as a reminder that those who cheat and steal will be brought to justice. Netflix declined to comment on the matter. Rinsch is currently being prosecuted by the Complex Frauds and Cybercrime unit.
