Historical Events of the Day | Lifestyle

Nearly a century ago on March 18, 1925, the Tri-State Tornado devastated southeastern Missouri, southern Illinois, and southwestern Indiana, ultimately becoming the deadliest tornado in U.S. history with nearly 700 fatalities. On that same day in 1922, Mohandas K. Gandhi was sentenced to six years in prison for civil disobedience in India but was released after serving two years. In 1937, America faced its worst school disaster when almost 300 people, mostly children, died in a natural gas explosion at the New London Consolidated School in Texas.

The impact of historical events continued on March 18 in 1942 as President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed an executive order establishing the War Relocation Authority, leading to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. In 1963, the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Gideon v. Wainwright mandated legal counsel for criminal defendants who could not afford an attorney.

In 2025, the world also commemorates tragic events such as the first death involving a fully autonomous test vehicle in 2018 when a self-driving Uber SUV struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona. Celebrating birthdays on this day are notable figures including composer John Kander, jazz musician Bill Frisell, and Olympic speed skating gold medalist Bonnie Blair. Actor and singer Queen Latifah, and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine also mark their birthdays on this day. This day serves as a reminder of both historical triumphs and tragedies that have shaped our world.
