Homeland Security officials announced on Monday that a doctor from Lebanon, Dr. Rasha Alawieh, was deported over the weekend despite having a valid U.S. visa. The department stated that Alawieh openly admitted to supporting a Hezbollah leader and attending his funeral, which led to her deportation. This explanation came after a federal judge ordered that she not be removed until a hearing could be held, but customs officials did not receive the message in time.
Alawieh, who is a kidney transplant specialist, was detained upon arrival at Boston Logan International Airport and was supposed to start work as an assistant professor of medicine at Brown University. Her colleagues rallied in support of her, emphasizing her crucial role in Rhode Island’s medical community.
The deportation of Alawieh and other incidents involving foreign-born individuals with U.S. visas have raised concerns about free speech and political repression. Lawyers for Alawieh and Mahmoud Khalil, another activist facing deportation, are advocating for their release and speaking out against what they see as retaliation for engaging in speech critical of the U.S. government.
