The Israeli Army targeted military sites in southern Syria, causing two deaths and injuring 19 people. The strikes were aimed at sites containing weapons and vehicles belonging to the forces of ousted Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Israel stated that these military assets posed a threat to the state and vowed to continue targeting threats in southern Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the strikes targeted a site previously used by al-Assad’s forces but now operated by Syria’s new government.
This is not the first time Israel has targeted the Deraa province, near the Jordanian border. Earlier this month, several Syrian military assets were also hit in the same area. Israel has stated that these strikes are meant to eliminate threats to its security. Al Jazeera’s Resul Serdar reported that four Israeli air strikes hit Deraa on Monday night, with Israel aiming to reduce Syria’s military and defense capacity in the region.
The ongoing conflict highlights the challenges faced by the Syrian government in maintaining control over its territory. Israel has conducted numerous air strikes in Syria since al-Assad’s ouster and has deployed troops to a buffer zone on the Golan Heights. Under al-Assad’s rule, Israel frequently targeted Syrian sites it deemed as threats, often linked to Iran and Hezbollah. The situation in southern Syria remains tense, with Israel asserting its security interests while the Syrian government struggles to maintain control over the region.
