Interdisciplinary artist Sanford Biggers has installed a new art piece in Sayles Hall at Brown University called “Unsui (Cloud Forest).” The installation consists of 10 glowing cloud sculptures suspended from the hall’s ceiling, made from LED lights that can change color and brightness. Inspired by the aerial space within the hall, Biggers aimed to create something that coexists with the building’s historic legacy. The installation complements the portraits lining the walls without disrupting them. Viewers are encouraged to look up and admire the whimsical addition to the formal space.
The installation, which reflects the fluidity of Brown’s Open Curriculum, aims to spark deeper reflection among viewers beyond its visual appeal. This piece adds to Brown’s public art scene, which already features several light-centered installations on campus. Biggers hopes that viewers of “Unsui (Cloud Forest)” find a moment of pause and meditation while experiencing his artwork.
