Johnson High School in Rhode Island has introduced a girls flag football team, a move that is part of a larger effort to get the sport sanctioned in the state. The team was started by assistant coach Randy Phillips and has garnered support from Athletic Director Justin Erickson. The push for girls flag football comes as the NFL is also showing interest in the sport, with a commercial during this year’s Super Bowl.
Speaking about the initiative, Erickson mentioned that the idea was well received as it provides another opportunity for girls to participate in sports on an equal playing field. He hopes to see the sport sanctioned in Rhode Island by 2027, with plans for a trial league starting this spring.
One of the players on the team, Olivia Iafrate, expressed her excitement about being part of the team and the opportunity to play football. She highlighted the sense of community and teamwork that the sport brings, as well as the chance for girls to participate in a traditionally male-dominated sport.
The introduction of a girls flag football team at Johnson High School is a step towards greater recognition and opportunities for female athletes in Rhode Island. With more states starting to sanction girls flag football and the support of the NFL, the sport is gaining momentum and is poised to become a significant part of the high school sports landscape.
