Indiana University team doctor accused of sexual abuse by former NBA player and coach

Former NBA player and coach Butch Carter has filed an amended lawsuit accusing a doctor for the Indiana University basketball team of sexually abusing him. Carter, who played for multiple NBA teams and was head coach of the Toronto Raptors, is the fifth former Indiana University basketball player to claim he complained to coach Bobby Knight about the doctor, Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr., performing unnecessary rectal examinations on young, healthy players. The lawsuit alleges that school officials, including longtime men’s basketball trainer Tim Garl, failed to protect student-athletes from Bomba.

According to the lawsuit, Dr. Bomba Sr. inserted at least one finger into Carter’s anus during a physical examination in 1979. Carter complained to Knight, team trainer Bob Young, and university officials about the abuse, but was dismissed. Carter stated in the lawsuit that Knight did not take any action to address his complaints. Other former players have also come forward with similar allegations against Bomba.

Carter is pushing for other former Indiana University basketball players to share their experiences publicly. The university has hired an independent law firm to review the allegations against Bomba. Bomba, who is now 88 years old, has not responded to requests for comment. University officials have not yet commented on the allegations.
