More than 1,000 casualties reported as 15-Tonne Aid From India reaches Yangon

A deadly earthquake centred in Myanmar has claimed the lives of over 150 people in both Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The 7.7-magnitude quake, which struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, was followed by a powerful 6.7-magnitude aftershock and several smaller tremors.

The devastation caused by the earthquake is widespread, with entire buildings collapsing in Mandalay and the historic Ava bridge tumbling into the Irawaddy river. The junta chief of Myanmar has confirmed the death toll at 144, but warned that the number is likely to rise as rescue efforts continue.

In response to the disaster, Myanmar’s military regime has issued a rare plea for international aid, inviting any country or organization to provide assistance. Offers of help have already begun to flood in, with India being among the first to offer support.

The situation remains dire as rescue workers race against time to search for survivors trapped under debris and provide aid to those affected by the quake. The international community is now mobilizing to assist Myanmar in the aftermath of this tragic event, offering hope to a nation grappling with the aftermath of a devastating natural disaster.
