Kongsberg Discovery has outfitted the historic sailing ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl with cutting-edge technology for the upcoming One Ocean Expedition. The 100-meter-long vessel, Norway’s largest sailing ship, will depart from Bergen on 11 April for a 12-month voyage across three continents.
The ship has been equipped with a range of Kongsberg Discovery technology, including ADCPs, Echo Sounders, hydrophones, and a Seapath GNSS-aided inertial navigation system. The Blue Insight ocean data management platform will process and share data collected during the expedition.
The goal of the One Ocean Expedition is to collect data on ocean health, marine ecosystems, and climate change impact. Kongsberg Discovery’s technology will be used to measure ocean currents, record underwater noise, and monitor marine life.
The expedition will make stops at 26 ports, including Reykjavik, Nuuk, Cambridge Bay, and Seattle. In Nice, France, team members will participate in the 2025 UN Ocean Conference. The ship will return to Bergen in April 2026.
Statsraad Lehmkuhl’s transformation into a research vessel marks a new chapter in its 111-year history. The vessel will play a crucial role in advancing knowledge and awareness of pressing ocean issues.
