New Technology Helps Decrease Temperature Increase When Charging Hydrogen, Making Refueling Safer and more Efficient!

A groundbreaking technology has been developed by a research team at the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) that aims to revolutionize hydrogen refueling systems. This new innovation prevents temperature rise during high-pressure hydrogen charging, leading to faster refueling times and reduced infrastructure costs. By utilizing an incompressible fluid, the technology eliminates the need for pre-cooling hydrogen before charging, making the process safer and more efficient.

Traditionally, hydrogen refueling systems required hydrogen to be cooled to -40°C to prevent temperature rise during charging, resulting in longer refueling times and higher costs. However, with this new technology, the internal tank temperature can be suppressed to within 5°C without the need for additional cooling systems. This not only speeds up the charging process but also reduces maintenance costs and improves long-term durability of the infrastructure.

Principal Researcher Dae-Hwan Kim highlighted the potential applications of this technology in various sectors, including vehicles, ships, trains, and military vehicles, emphasizing its role in promoting the hydrogen economy and enhancing global market competitiveness. The research, supported by KIMM’s Major Project, aims to further develop and commercialize this temperature rise prevention technology for hydrogen tanks during refueling.

This groundbreaking development signifies a significant advancement in hydrogen mobility and infrastructure, paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient hydrogen economy on a global scale.
