Teamsters Local 251 is calling for Rhode Island lawmakers to ban captive audience meetings, which are often used by employers to discourage workers from joining unions through intimidation and misinformation. The legislation, S126A and H5506, would ensure that no one is forced to endure political propaganda at work. Secretary-Treasurer Matt Taibi emphasized the importance of free will in workers’ engagement with unions and urged the House of Representatives to pass the companion legislation.
If approved, Rhode Island would join 11 other states in prohibiting captive audience meetings. The Teamsters, representing over 6,300 workers in various industries, are committed to protecting workers’ rights to free speech in the workplace.
