Patriotic Poles gathered in Warsaw to celebrate a millennium since the coronation of the first Polish king. Thousands marched, dancing the Polonaise, singing the national anthem, and supporting a conservative candidate for the upcoming presidential election. Law and Justice, the ruling party until 2023, aims to regain power and elect an ally as president. At the gathering in front of the Royal Castle, candidate Karol Nawrocki emphasized the importance of safeguarding Polish heritage and aspirations.
The rally attracted around 100,000 participants, with some expressing support for US President Donald Trump. However, Nawrocki is trailing in the polls behind liberal candidate Rafał Trzaskowski and facing competition from the far-right Confederation party. The election is set for May 18, with a runoff between the top two candidates if no one secures more than 50% of the vote. Incumbent Andrzej Duda, who is allied with Law and Justice, is ineligible to run for a third term.
The demonstration also commemorated historic moments in Polish history, including the millennium of the first king’s coronation and the 500th anniversary of the Ducy of Prussia’s allegiance to the Polish king. The event highlighted national pride and resilience in the face of past aggressions. City hall estimated 20,000 attendees, while the predominantly conservative crowd celebrated their patriotism and hopes for a strong Poland.
