The Harrington School at the University of Rhode Island is seeing a rise in interest in sports media and communication among students, offering opportunities for hands-on experience both inside and outside the classroom. However, a group of young women on campus noticed a sense of imbalance in the field, leading them to form the Women in Sports Group.
This organization aims to provide a safe space for all genders interested in sports to share their experiences, grievances, and love for sports. The group meets biweekly and plans to host speakers, including URI alum and professionals in the field, to discuss their career journeys and insights.
Despite progress in media coverage of women’s sports, issues of inequality and sexism still persist for women behind the scenes in sports broadcasting. The Women in Sports group hopes to address these issues and create a more inclusive environment for women in sports media.
Led by Brigid Locke, Nora Kelley, Grace Siorek, and Emma Roberts, the group plans to advocate for themselves and others in the industry. With exciting career plans in the sports industry, these young women are dedicated to building hard skills in sports media and fostering a supportive community for aspiring professionals.
Through their solidarity and support for each other, the Women in Sports group at URI aims to make a lasting impact on equality in sports media and provide a welcoming space for future generations of sports enthusiasts.
