A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Dietetics has found a correlation between consuming ultra-processed foods and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Navarra in Spain, analyzed data from over 13,000 participants over a 10-year period.

The researchers found that participants who consumed the highest amount of ultra-processed foods had a 31% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who consumed the lowest amount. Ultra-processed foods include items such as sugary snacks, packaged baked goods, and processed meats.

Lead researcher Dr. Maria Bes-Rastrollo emphasized the importance of reducing the consumption of ultra-processed foods and opting for whole, nutrient-dense options instead. She also highlighted the need for public health policies to address the role of ultra-processed foods in the development of chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes.

This study adds to the growing body of evidence linking ultra-processed foods to negative health outcomes and underscores the importance of making informed dietary choices to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
