Dr. Rasha Alawieh, a 34-year-old Lebanese citizen and assistant professor at Brown University’s medical school, was detained and sent back to Lebanon last week by U.S. Customs and Border Protection despite having a valid visa. According to Homeland Security, Alawieh allegedly told agents that she had attended the funeral of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during a recent visit to Lebanon. Nasrallah was an Islamic scholar and leader of the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.
Alawieh has been practicing as a kidney and transplant specialist and joined Brown University in July 2019. Her colleagues expressed shock and sadness at her sudden departure and emphasize her talent and dedication as a physician.
Federal prosecutors stated that Alawieh was sent back to Lebanon before the required 48-hour notice following a court order. Alawieh was not allowed to contact legal counsel during her 36-hour detainment. Her current attorney and former attorney did not respond to the accusations.
The Council on American–Islamic Relations called for Alawieh’s immediate readmission to the U.S., citing concerns of immigration enforcement targeting Muslim scholars. Brown University has warned faculty and staff against international travel due to evolving federal policies.
Representative Gabe Amo is working to gather information about Alawieh’s case and ensure clarity for her, her colleagues, and the community. The case has received attention for its potential violations of due process and the harsh treatment of a respected medical professional.
