K-9 Unit warmly welcomed back by Police

The Johnston Police Department has recently welcomed a new member to its force, K-9 Honza, a one-year-old German Shepherd from the Czech Republic. The addition of K-9 Honza marks the first time in over 12 years that the department has deployed a police canine. Honza and his handler, Officer Eli McGuire-Krueger, underwent an intensive eight-week training program at the Rhode Island K-9 Academy, focusing on narcotics detection.

Funded by opioid litigation funds from the Opioid Abatement Trust, the program covered the upfront costs for equipment and a vehicle specially outfitted for K-9 Honza. The department aims to improve its capabilities in addressing the opioid crisis by utilizing Honza to locate and seize dangerous drugs, creating a safer drug-free environment for the community.

Looking ahead, K-9 Honza will undergo additional patrol training to enhance his skills in assisting with the apprehension of offenders, locating missing persons, and recovering criminal evidence. Officer McGuire-Krueger is excited about the new role and is prepared to contribute to the department’s efforts in fighting drug trafficking and ensuring community safety.
