Many Rhode Islanders still need to comply with REAL ID requirements to fly soon – State News

Starting October 1, 2020, all U.S. travelers will need a REAL ID to fly. However, many Rhode Islanders are still not compliant with this federal requirement. The REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 to enhance national security by setting standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards.

According to the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles, only about 36% of residents currently have a REAL ID. This means that the majority of Rhode Islanders will not be able to board a domestic flight without a passport or other acceptable forms of identification after the deadline.

To obtain a REAL ID, individuals must provide documents that prove their identity, Social Security number, and Rhode Island residency. The DMV has extended hours and additional staff to help residents get their REAL ID before the deadline. The process can take time, so officials are encouraging Rhode Islanders to start the process as soon as possible.

Failure to comply with the REAL ID requirement could lead to significant disruptions for travelers. Rhode Islanders are urged to act quickly to ensure they can continue to fly without any issues.
