Power Restored to Almost All Puerto Rico Customers Following Island-Wide Blackout

Power has been restored to 98.8% of customers in Puerto Rico after an island-wide blackout earlier this week. More than 1.45 million customers had electricity less than 48 hours after the outage, caused by a transmission line failure. Luma Energy, which manages power distribution on the island, stated that some customers may still experience temporary outages due to limited generation. The blackout also left over 400,000 customers without water at the time.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the failure, looking into whether breakers failed or overgrown vegetation played a role. Governor Jenniffer González expressed concern over the “old, fragile equipment” in Puerto Rico and said she expects a preliminary report on the incident soon. She cut her vacation short to return to the island, calling the situation a shame for the people of Puerto Rico.

This blackout is the second major incident to hit Puerto Rico in less than four months, with the previous one occurring on New Year’s Eve. The governor emphasized the need for improved infrastructure and maintenance to prevent future catastrophic power failures. Despite the progress made in restoring power, the situation remains precarious, and some customers may still face intermittent outages in the coming days.
