Several homes in Westerly, Rhode Island, have suffered damage from rocks flying during a scheduled blast at a nearby quarry on Ashaway Road. Town officials have received at least four reports of incidents, with rocks smashing through roofs, damaging lawns, and hitting the road. Residents described the experience as similar to a meteor falling from the sky, with rocks as large as baseballs being thrown into their properties.
One homeowner, Alex McColl, was shocked to find a rock crashing through his roof while he was away at a golf course. The responsible company, Maine Drilling and Blasting, is currently being investigated by the Fire Marshal’s Office, which also issues blasting permits. In the past, two DPW employees were injured during a similar incident in 2018.
Maine Drilling and Blasting has declined to comment on the situation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported from Thursday’s incident. The community is concerned about the safety risks posed by the quarry’s blasting activities, and residents are hoping for a resolution to prevent further damage to their homes.
