Harpist Space Cowboy Newt, Inspired by ‘Zelda’, Showcases Talents on RI Report Podcast

Emma Newton, known by their stage name Space Cowboy Newt, fell in love with the harp after being inspired by a scene from the video game “The Legend of Zelda” as a child. Now 25, Newton performs around Rhode Island with their harp, Mr. Pluck, and works as an engineer at Big Nice Studio in Lincoln, R.I., recording local musicians for Rhode Island PBS’ “Ocean State Sessions.” They also started “The Protest Song Project” to produce social justice-focused songs for other artists free of charge.

In response to the Trump administration’s policies that silence queer, trans, and nonbinary voices, Newton uses their music to amplify these marginalized voices. Their single “haberdashery” explores the complexities of gender dysphoria and the challenges faced by nonbinary individuals. Newton stresses the importance of making these voices unignorable in the face of discriminatory policies, such as Trump’s executive order recognizing only two sexes, male and female, which erases the existence of trans, nonbinary, and intersex people.

Through their music and activism, Newton aims to create a space where marginalized voices can be heard and uplifted. Their passion for the harp, combined with a dedication to social justice, drives Newton’s creative work and performances in Rhode Island.
